ഇന്ത്യൻ ഭരണഘടനയുടെ ഭാഗം 1 (1) ൽ ഇപ്രകാരം വായിക്കുന്നു: “ഇന്ത്യ അതായത് ഭാരതം, സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു യൂണിയൻ ആയിരിക്കുന്നതാണ്”. ഇന്ത്യൻ ദേശീയ ഗാനത്തിലും കറൻസിയിലും പാസ്സ്പോർട്ടിലും ആധാർ കാർഡിലും പാൻ കാർഡിലും എല്ലാം “ഭാരതം” എന്ന പേരുണ്ട്. അത് ബി.ജെ.പി അധികാരത്തിൽ വന്നതിനു ശേഷം കൊണ്ടുവന്നതല്ല. ഇന്ത്യാ രാഷ്ട്രം രൂപീകൃതമായ കാലം മുതൽ തന്നെ ഉള്ളതാണ്. ഒരു ഭാരതീയനും അതിൽ അല്പം പോലും അസ്വസ്ഥതയോ ഏതെങ്കിലും തരത്തിലുള്ള പരാതിയോ ഇല്ല. എന്നാൽ ഇപ്പോൾ നരേന്ദ്ര മോദിയും കൂട്ടരും ഭാരതം എന്ന പേര് മാത്രം നിലനിർത്തി ഇന്ത്യ എന്നതു പൂർണ്ണമായും ഒഴിവാക്കാൻ നീക്കം നടത്തുന്നു എന്നൊരു കേഴ്വിയുണ്ട്. ഔദ്യോഗികമായ അറിയിപ്പൊന്നും ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല. ഇന്ത്യയുടെ മതേതര സ്വഭാവത്തെ കൂടുതൽ ഹനിക്കുന്ന മറ്റൊരു നീക്കമായിരിക്കും അത് എന്ന കാര്യത്തിൽ സംശയമില്ല. INDIA എന്ന പ്രതിപക്ഷ പാർട്ടികളുടെ കൂട്ടായ്‌മ നിലവിൽവന്നതിലുള്ള കലിപ്പിലാണ് മോദി സർക്കാർ ഇപ്പോൾ ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു നിലപാട് സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നതെന്നു പൊതുവെ ഒരു വിലയിരുത്തലുണ്ട്. പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും ജി-20 സമ്മേളനത്തിനു രാഷ്ട്രത്തലവന്മാർ ഇവിടെ എത്തുന്നതുമൂലം ലോക മാധ്യമശ്രദ്ധ ഇന്ത്യയിലേക്കു കേന്ദ്രീകരിക്കുന്ന വേളയിൽ ഈ പേരുമാറ്റം പരമാവധി ചർച്ചയാക്കുക എന്ന ഉദ്ദേശവും സർക്കാരിയുണ്ടായിരിക്കാം.
ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാർ ഭാരതത്തിനു ഇട്ട പേരാണ് “ഇന്ത്യ” എന്ന തരത്തിൽ ചിലർ പ്രസ്താവിച്ചു കണ്ടു. അത് ശരിയല്ല. ഏറ്റവും കുറഞ്ഞത് ബി.സി. അഞ്ചാം നൂറ്റാണ്ട് മുതൽ തന്നെ ഇന്ത്യ എന്ന നാമം സിന്ധു (Indus) നദിതട പ്രദേശങ്ങളെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുവാൻ ഉപയോഗിച്ചുവന്നിരുന്നു. “ഹിന്ദു” എന്ന പേരും സിന്ധു നദിയോടു ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടാണ് ഉണ്ടായത്. ക്രിസ്തുവിനു 400 വർഷം മുൻപ് എഴുതപ്പെട്ട എസ്ഥേറിന്റെ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ “ഹിന്തുദേശം മുതൽ കൂശ്‌ (എത്യോപ്യ) വരെ നൂറ്റിരുപത്തേഴു സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ വാണ അഹശ്വേരോശ്” എന്ന പേർഷ്യൻ രാജാവിനെ കുറിച്ച് പരാമർശിക്കുന്നു. ബി.സി 484 -425 കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന ഗ്രീക്ക് ചരിത്രകാരനായ ഹെറോഡൊട്ടസും ‘ഇന്ത്യ’ എന്ന നാടിനെകുറിച്ചു രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അങ്ങനെ നോക്കുമ്പോൾ ഇന്ത്യ എന്ന പേരിനു സഹസ്രാബ്ദങ്ങളുടെ ചരിത്രമുണ്ടെന്നു കാണാം. വിഭജനകാലത്തു ഇന്ത്യയെ ‘ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാൻ’ എന്നും ‘പാകിസ്ഥാൻ’ എന്നും പേരിട്ടു തിരിക്കണമെന്ന അഭിപ്രായമായിരുന്നു മുഹമ്മദ് അലി ജിന്നക്ക് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ ജവാഹർലാൽ നെഹ്രുവിന് അതിനോട് യോജിപ്പുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. അദ്ദേഹം ഇന്ത്യ എന്ന പേരു തന്നെ നിലനിർത്തി. മതേതര ഭാരതത്തിനു ഒരു മതത്തിന്റെയും പേരിനോടു സാമ്യം വേണ്ട എന്നു തീരുമാനിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു, നെഹ്രു. എങ്കിലും ‘ഇന്ത്യ’, ‘ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാൻ’, ‘ഭാരതം’ എന്നീ പേരുകളിൽ ഈ നാട് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
ഋഗ്വേദത്തിൽ പരാമർശിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ആര്യാവർത്തത്തിലെ പ്രധാന രാജാക്കന്മാരായ ഭരതരുടെ വൈദിക ഗോത്രത്തിന്റെ പേരിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഭാരതം എന്ന പേര് ഉത്ഭവിച്ചതെന്നാണ് പൊതുവെ കരുതപ്പെടുന്നത്. അല്ല, മഹാഭാരതത്തിലെ ദുഷ്യന്തന്റെയും ശകുന്തളയുടെയും പുത്രനായ ഭരതൻ, രാമായണത്തിലെ ശ്രീരാമന്‍റെ പാദുകംവെച്ച് രാജ്യം ഭരിച്ച അനുജൻ ഭരതൻ എന്നിവരുടെ പേരുകളിൽ നിന്നും ഉരുത്തിരിഞ്ഞുവന്ന നാമമാണ് ഭാരതം എന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. എന്തായാലും ഒരുകാലത്ത് ഭരിച്ചിരുന്ന രാജാക്കന്മാരുടെ പേരുകളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് ‘ഭാരതവർഷം’ എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന പ്രദേശമാണ് ഈ നാട്. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ‘ഭാരതം’ എന്ന പേരിൽ ഈ രാജ്യം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നതിൽ അപാകത ഒന്നുമില്ല. എന്നാൽ മറ്റു പേരുകൾ ഒഴിവാക്കി ഹൈന്ദവ പുരാണങ്ങളിലെ പേര് മാത്രം നിലനിർത്തണമെന്നു ശഠിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ പിന്നിൽ സംഘപരിവാർ അജണ്ടയാണെന്ന ആശങ്കയാണ് പലർക്കും ഉള്ളത്. അത്തരം നീക്കങ്ങൾ രാജ്യത്തെ സാമുദായിക മൈത്രി തകർക്കുകയും രാജ്യത്തെ ശിഥിലമാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും എന്നും അവർ ഭയപ്പെടുന്നു. “ഇന്ത്യ എന്റെ രാജ്യമാണ്” എന്ന് അഭിമാനത്തോടെ പറയാനും “ഭാരത് മാതാ കി ജയ്” വിളിക്കാനും “സാരെ ജഹാൻ സെ അച്ഛാ ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാൻ ഹമാരാ ഹമാരാ” എന്ന് പാടുവാനും ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന പൗരന്മാരുടെ നാടാണ് ഇത്. ‘നാനാത്വത്തിൽ ഏകത്വം’ അതാണ് നമ്മുടെ ഭാരതം. അതിനെ മൊത്തത്തിൽ കാവിവത്കരിച്ചു, ‘ഹിന്ദി- ഹിന്ദു -ഹിന്ദുത്വ’ എന്ന കപട ദേശീയത നടപ്പാക്കി ഏകതാനത കൈവരിക്കാമെന്നു ചിന്തിച്ചാൽ അത് ഈ രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ നിലനിൽപ്പിനു തന്നെ ഭീഷണിയായി മാറിയേക്കാം. എന്നാൽ ചിലർക്കു ഇതൊന്നും പ്രശ്നമല്ല. “ആഴ്വാഞ്ചേരിത്തമ്പ്രാക്കളെയും അയ്യൻപുലയനെയും” സമഭാവനയോടെ കണ്ട് “പരക്കെ നമ്മെ പാലമൃതൂട്ടുന്ന പാർവ്വണ ശശിബിംബത്തെ” പോലും കാവിപുതപ്പിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് ഇതൊക്കെ എന്ത്?
